RunCat displays an animated cat in the Mac menu bar that runs at varying speeds based on real-time CPU usage. When the system is idle, the cat strolls leisurely; as CPU usage increases, the cat accelerates to a sprint. This approach transforms system monitoring into visual feedback that requires no active attention.
The app provides system information beyond CPU monitoring, including memory performance, storage capacity, battery status, and network connection details. Users can gauge system performance at a glance without opening Activity Monitor or interrupting workflow.
RunCat offers 57 different “runners” through its in-app store. Options include animals (dogs, rabbits, cheetahs), inanimate objects (rockets, cogwheels), and seasonal themes (reindeer, snowmen). The free version includes several cat variations (Cat α/β/γ, Cat Tail, Mock Nyan Cat). Extra runners are in-app purchases; an Unlock All pack is listed around €8.99 depending on store region.
A self-made runner in-app purchase allows custom animations: PNG, 36px height, 10-100px width, up to 50 frames. Animation originally stayed on the primary display because of streaming-app glitches; later Apple Silicon builds experimentally show the first frame on other displays.
The current RunCat requires macOS 14 or later and is about 3.5MB. It has been in development since 2018. The developer states that support for this version ends at the end of 2026. The successor is RunCat Neo (Mac App Store id6757801838, macOS 26+).
Limitations include the aesthetic-focused approach that may not suit users needing detailed performance graphs or logging. US App Store lookup for the original id1429033973 can fail; some regions already surface Neo instead.
